For day-hikes
Well really I think I have about 13…
- Navigation: I use the Gaia app on my iPhone with pre-downloaded maps, trail description, etc. I carry a compass, and usually carry a real map for less known terrain and longer trips.
- Illumination: Headlamp and extra batteries
- Sun protection: Sunscreen, sunglasses, hat/buff, lip balm, light layer
- First aid kit: I make my own (from raiding my sweet, retired nurse mother’s supplies)
- Insulation: Layers, including a rain jacket/shell, gaiters
- Fire: Waterproof matches, fire starter, lighter, sometimes a stove&fuel
- Repair/Fix: Multi-tool, gear patches
- Shelter: Emergency bivy
- Food: Snacks, extra plus meal for emergencies
- Water: Usually a hydration bladder, and lightweight filter system
- One of my beloved Kula Cloth‘s
- Extra battery for phone
- Sit pad or lightweight blanket for lunch/rest/sharing
Winter additions: More layers, beanie, gloves and micro-spikes or snowshoes
Not often enough: my DSLR camera
Never mentioned, but necessary: Gregory 28 day-pack
Also important: Trip itinerary left with someone back home!
